Pro Spotlight: Interview With Alex LaMarsh – Dramatic Makeup from Wolvves Music Video

The Wolvves “White On White” music video for Flaunt Magazine gives us a glimpse of what electro-horror dance music sounds and LOOKS like…and it’s eerie, in a sexy way. Celebrity Hair and Makeup Artist Alex LaMarsh, and Director Daniel Gomes brought this video to fruition with dramatic and edgy makeup looks and scenes. Alex is a NY-based artist with years of experience. Her extensive client list includes Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, InStyle, Keeping Up with the Kardashian’s, George Lopez Show, Nike and celebrities Talib Kweli, Kevin Hart, Kim Kardashian and Mike Posner to name a few.

We recently caught up with Alex LaMarsh, and in an exclusive interview with Skindinavia she names each product used to achieve the looks. Along with her do’s and don’ts for intricate and long-wear makeup.

Makeup should enhance beauty,
not outshine it.”
– Alex LaMarsh

Did you have full liberty on choosing the makeup direction? Could you explain your prep process for the makeup theme in the video?

“I didn’t have full liberty on all the looks. The director had some general ideas of what he wanted for the more creative looks and I played off those. Everything is monochromatic and I wanted the looks to have movement and freshness of texture rather than static flat makeup. Elizabeth [female member of the Wolvves] wanted a beautiful face for one of the looks so I tried to create a strong & classic yet softly beautiful look to show off her incredible features. Makeup should enhance beauty, not outshine it.”

How did you achieve Elizabeth’s edgy/dark look:

“I used Bioxidea to moisturize the skin and give it a healthy fresh look. Followed up by Estee Lauder Illuminating Perfecting Primer to give everyone’s skin a glow. On Elizabeth I used Estee Lauder Invisible Fluid Makeup for flawless skin without the makeup look. I also used Benefit Cosmetics Benetint and Highbeam for defined cheeks and glowing pale skin. Benefit Cosmetics Tattle Tale and Estee Lauder’s Bronze Goddess Eyeshadow kit with Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay in Place Gel Eyeliner For her amazing brows I used Gimme Brow, High Brow and High Brow Glow by Benefit Cosmetics. Lips were Lime Crime’s Black Velvet. For her black face mask look I used MAC Chroma Cakes. On the boys I used Estee Lauder’s Double Wear Stay in Place Gel to make the shapes stay without smudging or sweating off.”

What’s your your best trick for long-wear makeup?

“Always use good quality highly pigmented products. Start with moisturized skin and a great face primer. Use gel liners with angle brushes instead of pencils. Use cream shadows instead of powder. Once you have the look done to your liking give yourself a good coat of Skindinavia and you can go out worry free!”

What are your do’s and don’ts of creating an intricate makeup look for Halloween?

“Once you have the look done to your liking give yourself a good coat of Skindinavia and you can go out worry free!”
– Alex LaMarsh

“Pick your theme and stick with it, then narrow down your favorite parts, its easy to over do it. People make the mistake of doing dramatic eyes, dramatic lips, dramatic cheeks all in one look. Pick what you want to be the star of your makeup look, then let the other features be the supporting cast members. If you do too many BIG things on one face it just looks silly or like someone vomited makeup all over you. No body wants that! You’ll get the most compliments if you pick one thing to stand out and then build the rest of the look up around that. It makes the over all look more dramatic and eye catching. Also practice your makeup look a few times before the big night of the party. It gives you time to play with the look and nail down what does and doesn’t work. That way you aren’t rushing and frustrated getting ready. Nothings worse than realizing what you thought would be amazing was an epic fail. Get the fails out of the way before so on your big night out all you have to do is look amazing.”
